Quick Overview

This is a highly original play that will have your sixth formers, or even mature GCSE students gripped. The play is based around the extended monologue of a teenage boy, Shirley, who is not only struggling to fit in with his girl’s name, but struggles to deal with the crush he has on a classmate. He creates a friendship with Wound Man, a superhero inspired by a sixteenth century surgical diagram. Shirley becomes Wound Man’s sidekick and the two develop a friendship that is tender, very funny and extremely imaginative. The play moves between fantasy and reality, humour and tragedy. Whilst it may sound like a tale for younger students, it is cleverly written as an adult parable with hidden metaphors, occasional adult language and superbly inventive dialogue.

Words really can not do this play justice, you have to read it to understand how exceptional and unusual it is. Students will not have encountered anything like this before. Despite being written as a one-man show it offers students the chance for some experimental group performances. It’s a great way to experiment with postmodern playwriting techniques such as narrative, meta-theatre, the blurring together of fantasy and reality, monologues, sound and experimental performances. It’s a perfect text to encourage students to think outside of the box, to move away from realism and to appreciate the superb talent of this playwright. It could inspire some great devised pieces.
