This pack follows the demands of the new specification and jam-packed full of theory, practical ideas, teaching suggestions and photocopiable student handouts. The pack will help you to deliver the text in terms of its context, from the perspective of a performer and designer, looking at key extracts and preparing students for the exam.
The pack is split into 5 key sections:
1. Exploring the play through practical ideas-this section will allow you teach the entire play using a practical approach. It would be great to use this section when students are just starting to look at the script and you can teach it in its entirety through the practical exercises and workshop-style activities.
2. Exploring the social, historical and cultural messages within the play-this section is full of teaching ideas and handouts to allow you to fully teach the context of this play. It covers topics such as society's views towards mental illness, the ethical issues presented in the play such as eugenics and how this would affect Verity, autism and Verity, and how attitudes towards mental illness have progressed looking at real-life examples such as the Broadmoor patient Albert Haines. It will ensure that your students have a full understanding of the play's contextual messages.
3. Teaching characterisation-this is the largest section of the booklet and is the one that will provide you with a wealth of practical and theoretical activities to help your students to fully understand key roles such as Verity, Mark, Jean and Edward.
4.Directorial Projects-this section provides two directorial tasks for the students in order for them to view the play in light of contemporary theatre practitioners and ideas. One project encourages students to consider how Brecht's theories about alienation could be used in a performance, whilst another project requires students to look at the play in terms of Boal's Forum Theatre.
5. Working with specific moments-this final section would be great for your revision lessons. It explores several key moments of the play in great detail providing both written and practical activities for the students.
